What is Whey Protein

Whey protein

Whey protein is a mixture of proteins isolated from whey, which is the liquid part of milk that separates during cheese production. Milk contains two main types of proteins: casein (80%) and whey (20%). Whey is found in the watery portion of milk. When cheese is produced, the fatty parts of the milk coagulate and the whey is separated from it as a byproduct. If you've ever opened a container of yogurt and seen liquid floating on top, that's whey. Cheese producers used to discard it before discovering its commercial value. Once separated during cheese production, whey goes through several processing steps to become what people generally recognize as whey protein - a powder that is added to beverages.

Whey protein is commonly used to improve athletic performance and increase strength. This protein is also used to reverse weight loss in people with HIV and help prevent allergic conditions in babies. It is a source of protein that can improve the nutrient content of the diet. Whey protein may also have effects on the immune system.

The importance of proteins

Proteins are the main building blocks of the human body. They are used to make several important things, including tendons, organs and skin, as well as hormones, enzymes, neurotransmitters and various molecules. Proteins are assembled from amino acids, smaller molecules that are linked together like a rope. Some amino acids are produced by your body's cells, while others are provided by the foods you eat. The ones you get from food are called essential amino acids. Proteins that provide all nine essential amino acids are best and whey protein is loaded with them. Whey protein is particularly effective at stimulating growth in humans. In fact, breast milk is made up of 60% whey, compared to 20% in cow's milk.

 Uses and effectiveness

Athletic performance: Most research shows that taking whey protein in combination with strength training increases lean body mass, strength, and muscle size in young, healthy adults. Taking whey protein may also improve running speed and recovery from exercise in non-athlete adults. Whey protein appears to work just as well as soy, chicken, or beef protein for increasing muscle strength.

Cholesterol reduction: One study, published in The British Journal of Nutrition, provided whey protein supplements to 70 overweight men and women for 12 weeks and measured several parameters such as lipid and insulin levels. They found that "there was a significant decrease in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol at week 12 in the whey group compared to the casein (group)."

Weight loss in people with HIV: Some research shows that consuming whey protein orally may help slow weight loss in people with HIV.

Blood pressure and cardiovascular disease: Research published in the International Dairy Journal found that drinks supplemented with whey protein significantly reduced blood pressure in patients with hypertension; the risk of developing heart disease or stroke was also lower.

Red, scaly skin: Some evidence shows that taking a specific whey protein extract daily for 8 weeks may reduce psoriasis symptoms.

Whey protein is safe for most adults when taken orally. High doses may cause some side effects, such as increased bowel movements, nausea, thirst, reduced appetite and headache.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: avoid use as there is not enough information about the safety of taking whey protein if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Milk allergy: if you are allergic to cow's milk, avoid using whey protein
